Is your Data Better Protected in the Cloud?

If I was to mention the cloud right now, and tell you that data protection is a big part of what the cloud offers, you might look at me sideways. After all, the general perception is that the cloud isn’t really set up for data protection. A Bitglass-sponsored Cloud Adoption Report found that more than half of large companies and a third of SMBs have delayed cloud adoption due to security worries.

But a lot of that perception is founded in the ambiguity that persists around what the cloud really is. As The Guardian discussed in a recent article, “the lack of an edge that clearly defines the cloud environment your organization may be considering sending your data to can make it seemingly difficult to protect.”

However, as more organizations are deploying the cloud and gaining better awareness around the data protection challenges that exist, those fears should dissipate. And as Network Computing pointed out, data protection in the cloud era involves reviewing security policies and procedures with a fine-tooth comb before proceeding forward.

Some of the specific data protection and security questions you ask yourself include:

  • Who is accessing your data and how often?
  • What kind of data do you have in the cloud already?
  • How many people are in charge of protecting it?
  • How much visibility do you need for ongoing network protection?
  • Do you need to factor compliance risks to secure your assets in the cloud?

If you’ve answered these questions, and you find that your current data protection setup isn’t up to par, it’s time to consider what a dedicated hosted service provider can offer.
